Restos XXL

The people behind the Toulouse food guide

We are a small team of local eaters, home cooks, and restaurant regulars who spend our evenings in the bistros and street stalls of Toulouse. Our reviews come from real visits, real orders, and honest opinions about what works and what does not.

Who We Are

The People Behind the Toulouse Table

Restos XXL started as a shared notebook between three friends who kept arguing about where to eat in Toulouse. That argument turned into a city-wide food diary, then into this guide. We are not a marketing arm for restaurants and we do not take payment for coverage. We visit anonymously, pay for our own meals, and write what we actually found.
Editorial

Independent Reviews Only

Every bistro, stall, and dessert counter we write about is visited without announcing ourselves. We order like regular customers, pay the bill, and take notes on the table next to ours. If a kitchen sends out something mediocre, we say so plainly.

No sponsored placements. No paid ratings.
Local Focus

Neighborhood-Level Coverage

We walk the streets of Capitole, Saint-Cyprien, and Carmes the way a resident would, not a tourist on a tight schedule. That means we cover the weekday lunch menu at a family-run bistro as carefully as the late-night merguez stand that only appears after 11pm.

Three districts, dozens of tables, one honest notebook.
Seasonal

Menus That Change With the Market

Toulouse cooking follows the seasons, and so do our updates. When the violet harvest arrives, we revisit the patisseries. When duck confit season peaks, we re-test the classics. Our guides are refreshed as menus change, not copied from last year.

Updated as the market turns, not on a fixed schedule.
For Everyone

Families, Students, Solo Diners

A table for one near Carmes is a different experience from a family lunch in Saint-Cyprien. We note noise levels, table spacing, whether the staff rushes you, and which spots handle a stroller without drama. Practical details matter as much as the sauce.

Honest notes on comfort, pace, and value.
Chef Voices

Interviews, Not Press Releases

We sit down with the cooks who actually run the pass, not the PR team. They tell us about bean suppliers, firewood choices, and why they refuse to change a grandmother's recipe. These conversations shape our recommendations more than any star rating.

Direct quotes from the kitchen, not from a handout.

Built on Reader Tips

Some of our best finds came from a reader's email about a tucked-away bistro or a student's tip about a lunch deal near the university. We verify every suggestion with our own visit, then credit the person who sent it. The guide grows because people share.

Your tip becomes our next review.

How Restos XXL Toulouse Grew Into a Local Dining Reference

Read our latest guide

2019 — Started as a weekend newsletter covering five bistro openings around Saint-Cyprien. The first issue had 47 subscribers and a single promise: honest reviews, no sponsored placements.

2021 — Launched the street food map after spending three months documenting late-night stalls near Capitole. That map now gets updated every season and is used by local students and hotel concierges alike.

2023 — Introduced chef interviews as a regular feature. The first conversation, with a Carmes district bistro owner, led to a reader meetup that sold out in two days and became a quarterly tradition.

2025 — Reached a steady readership of over 12,000 monthly visitors, with a volunteer team of six contributors who each cover a specific neighborhood. We still refuse paid reviews and keep every recommendation independently verified.
